Yes, I do remember the spanking debates we used to have at SI. I believe that for the most part, conservatives were generally more in favor of spanking than liberals, but it was a long time ago. Perhaps we could take a poll, and see if that still is true!?

I do think it is possible to be overly permissive with children--they are conservative by nature and like consistent, stable environments. But it is very easy to offer all of that with systems of discipline like natural consequences--spanking is not necessary at all in my opinion. Spoiled children are the result of inconsistent parenting techniques, not "sparing the rod."

I am not sure if you are aware of it, but that do-not-beat-your-child-until-you-leave-marks law was much stricter before it was passed--it was no spanking at all. The new law is actually a big compromise. Austria, in addition to all of the Scandinavian countries, do have no-spanking-at-all laws, and that is an excellent thing, in my opinion. I am sure all of Europe will have them eventually.
