Part of this is cultural, part is biological. On the biology part women like professions that involve people - a lot of math and science careers involve pretty dry research.

On the cultural part - there is definitive typecasting of engineers and scientists and women don't like to be nerds.

Case in point, a niece of mine, was just accepted to engineering school. Her mother was horrified - and we had a an argument.

Her mother speaks 4 languages and is a high school principal. She does not want her girl to wear a pocket protector :-)

Prejudice runs in both directions.
