Most tsunamis are the result of some sort of displacement in the sea floor. That is roughly equivalent to dropping a pebble in a pond. When you do something like that, you don't just get a single wave, you get a series of waves of decreasing amplitude. In addition, tsunami waves have a very long wavelength, so those waves are spaced out at a distance of up to 200 km. Here is a good description of the whole process.

So how long a tsunami lasts is sort of dependent on what you want to classify as a tsunami. There are going to be shock related waves for a long while, but most of them aren't going to be very significant in size.
