It seems to me that, if society can't handle the nuance of reality, the better choice for society between unrealities is that men and women are identical, even though we know they aren't. That intentional ignorance does less damage than bigotry.

Very good. I don't expect most people to understand that, but I am surprised and shocked that Lawrence Summers does not understand it.

What was Dr. Summers thinking?

The topic under discussion was : "Diversifying the Science and Engineering Workforce: Women, Underrepresented Minorities, and their S. & E. Careers."

Let me illustrate Dr Summers obtuseness in another way.

Lets' change the subject to something that is even more obvious in differences between men and women: "Diversifying elite marathon runners at the New York Marathon: Women, Underrepresented Minorities, and their marathon Careers."

Would it help to say:

1. Women are inferior to men physically.
2. Women have babies and would have less time to train.

On the surface and for the very obtuse, the conclusion seem inescapable.

But what is the reality?

Men have been running marathons for more than 2000 years.

Women have started to run marathons in less than 50 years.

50 years ago the difference between elite men and women finishing the marathon was about 45 minutes.

Today, the difference is less than 15 minutes.

If Paula Radcliff were to run in the United States Marine Corp marathon held in Washington DC each year, she would win by more than 10 minutes.

Is it possible for elite women marathon runners to compete with men in a few years time?

Is it possible for a woman to become the best marathoner in the world some time in the near future?

What is Dr. Summers thinking?
