But it is very easy to offer all of that with systems of discipline like natural consequences--spanking is not necessary at all in my opinion. Spoiled children are the result of inconsistent parenting techniques, not "sparing the rod."

Most natural consequences to bad child behavior are directly negative for the parent and only indirectly and often at a long distance, negative impacts on the child. A distance that is too remote to effectively guide behavior btw.

Spoiled children are, therefore, most likely the product of a parent who is overly concerned about their own immediate comfort. Parents who will 'cave' on issues that they know are harmful to the child (staying up late, for example) are inneffective at raising strong, healthy children, who inherently understand the value of parental discipline and who are able to generalize that to self discipline.

I'm guessing you don't know from first hand experience ... just a guess.

Whatever the natural consequences are for an 8 year old staying up late, they are not likely to effectively guide the behavior of an 8 year old to a more healthy routine.

I have never spanked a child for what that's worth.

The most effective natural consequence for a child's behavior it the approval/disapproval of their parent. Doesn't work to well for you non-judgemental types.
