I think you are exactly right. Republicans like Bush is probably trying to do just that, eliminate the progressive benefit elements of Social Security

Integrity requires stating such things.

I would like to see a link established between contributions and benefits paid for the simple reason that I think it is the only way to stabilize this system for eternity. Otherwise, you're always going to have to mess with the plan in the future, as demographic trends change. Just wait until our population stabilizes, like has already happened in many European countries. That will create havoc in a plan structured like ours, just like the Baby Boom will be doing over the next 20-40 years.

Not sure that I follow you here. I see three main issues with SS

1) Governmental accounting scandal. (Raiding SS funds)
2) Wealth transfer from richer to poorer (PIA formula)
3) ROI vs risk. (Investment options)

I see all three as being independent. That is it is easy to conceive of various means of tinkering with all three independently.

Bush is proposing a sidestep of all three using 1/3 of the funds. But he is not being honest in explaining that. He is just babbling the rightwing talk that warms the hearts of conservatives (private ownership, taking it back from the government, letting me control my own destiny, etc). Mostly he will not discuss 2. Until I started beating the bushes here, no one was either.

Can't conservatives muster the courage to discuss all of the aspects, and make arguments for how and why each one needs changing?
