AnalogZONE recognizes Pasquale Pistorio's environmental commitment and the superiority of ST's single-chip satellite tuner

GENEVA, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM - News) announced that the Company's outgoing CEO, Pasquale Pistorio, has been honored with AnalogZONE's Green Hero Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional dedication to building an environmentally neutral corporation. In addition, the Company received the prestigious "Product of the Year" award from AnalogZONE, the premier online source for electronics design, for its latest satellite tuner IC. Selected from among the hundreds of products reviewed by the magazine in 2004, the single-chip STB6000 has been credited for dramatically reducing both the cost and complexity of satellite receivers.
AnalogZONE decided to honor ST's outgoing CEO, Pasquale Pistorio, in recognition of his unswerving commitment to environmental protection throughout his career. The Green Hero Lifetime Achievement Award singles out Pistorio's unparalleled practices in designing, manufacturing, and distributing the company's products with the environment in mind. According to AnalogZONE, Pistorio lifelong emphasis has proven "that 'green' can result in major positive impacts on the bottom line of a company."

"With its unwavering commitment to sustainable development, ST provides excellent proof that those corporations that give special care to their social role and to their behavior as good corporate citizens in the communities where they operate not only fulfill their ethical obligations but also maximize the return to their shareholders. I'm proud that this effort has been recognized as well as our commitment to technology," said Pasquale Pistorio. "The STB6000 product is an example of our technical leadership in consumer digital, where our investment in R&D and product development has translated into more than 70% market share in set-top-box decoder ICs and broad strength across the board."

AnalogZONE's Product of the Year award winners are selected by the Web site's engineer/editors by evaluating the product's performance, anticipated market success, and likely contribution to the field of analog engineering and product design. The evaluation team believes the winning products "will make significant bottom line numbers for the companies involved," because of their strong technical merit, design innovation, and marketability.

ST's STB6000 single-chip satellite tuner replaces complex discrete component tuners in set-top boxes and saves production costs through the lower component count and simplified printed circuit board design. "The simplified front-end of the satellite receiver chain is going to allow the remainder of the receiver/STB to be developed by non-RF design engineers. This part is going to be a huge success story and will reduce both the cost and complexity of satellite receivers," commented AnalogZONE's Editor-in-Chief Paul McGoldrick.
