No embarrassment. I mispelled his name. Khamenei instead of Khomenie. By the way, I'm old enough to remember the older one, just not Iranian spelling. :)

As far as Iran's track record on democracy, it is a sham. They have all the institutions in place, but the judiciary lead by Khamenei as the Supreme Leader can override any law passed by parliament.

In the last election, all the reformers boycotted the election because the conservatives banned several thousand of them from running for office. So of course, the conservatives ran the table on elections.

Iran is a sham democracy and the people are very disappointed with Khatami (sp?). The people are being held hostage to a theocratic regime that doesn't allow them the same freedoms we have in the western world.

As far as the Shah goes, more bad U.S. policy. One day we will learn that we cannot prop up tyrants to buy short term stability. It always leads to long term instability.

Lastly, you say that diplomacy was at fault here wrt our relationship with Iran and Syria and I agree. However, both Iran and Syria are active supporters of terrorism and terrist groups. Bashar had a grand chance to turn to democracy, but he took the cowards way out and shelved those plans when the Baathists pressured him to keep the status quo. Iran is a lead by virulent regime that spews and incredible amount of vitriol against the U.S. and Israel. Very difficult to be diplomatic with a country that can't see past their own hate.
