Oral, I couldn't agree more regarding the lack of deaths. The field day just prior to the incident probably saved a dozen lives, given the fact they must have stowed for sea big-time. In addition, the damage control training and medical assistance must have been outstanding.

A chart from 1989 is not uncommon. Calling it "old" the way the reporter did is kind of amusing. It's a relative term. The Navy is going through a huge transition from paper charts to electronic charts, and the process is allot more complicated then people would imagine. There are few people who utilize the three dimensional world of undersea navigation, therefore, leveraging the assets of the civilian technology sector is problematic.
