Ciena Corp. Accuses Nortel Networks of Infringing on Six Patents on Networking Systems and Technology

LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) -- Ciena Corp. is accusing Nortel Networks Corp. of infringing on six patents related to Ciena's communications networking systems and technology.
The U.S. telecom equipment maker said Tuesday it had filed a complaint against the Canadian-based firm in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Texas.

Ciena did not specify damages it would seek.

Nortel spokeswoman Tina Warren said Tuesday the company had not yet received a copy of the lawsuit and that it would be premature to comment.

The lawsuit came as a two-year agreement between the companies to not sue each other ended. At the time, the companies said they would look to find ways they could work together through licensing agreements rather than continuously going to court to settle disputes.

U.S.-traded Nortel shares fell 8 cents, or 2.4 percent, to close at $3.24 in Tuesday trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Ciena shares closed unchanged at $2.91 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
