Bush does have some LBJ similarities - launching an ill conceived war of choice and at least one very expensive major domestic program, the medicare drug benefit, that also seems to be ill conceived. It's cheaper for seniors just to buy their drugs from Canada!
LBJ has something in his resume' that Bush does not. His civil rights initiatives did more for the status of black Americans than any legislation since the civil war, an act of political courage that cost the Democrats the (solid Democratic) South, perhaps forever. If not for Vietnam, he might be regarded as a great President today.
I also applaud the ambitious space program of the time, launched by Kennedy and enthusiastically continued by LBJ.
At the time, I hated him. He was trying to send me to Vietnam.
