Actually, a national sales tax is a fine idea.

I agree. Get rid of all the nonsense that everyone has to go through on or before each April 15th. Also it wouldn't disourage saving and investment.

I think however that with current and projected levels of government spending their might be to much tax avoidence if it all came from the sales tax. Of course if we have to lower spending to keep the rates reasonable I'd see it as a plus but many would not.

Then there is the "regressive tax argument". Different people have different ideas to deal with this objection from flat out disagreeing with the idea that it is a problem, to having the government send everyone a check each year to offset the first $X of sales tax that people pay. How would you respond to this objection?
