And they were silent ones, too, without any explosions -- only tidal waves. And major geological perturbations for weeks afterwards, including the expansion of the earth.


First, keep in mind that, even without any major seismic perturbation or explosion, the seismogram for the Java and Sumatra trenchs would never display a FLAT LINE!! Continuous, above-average activity along these faults(*) means continuous oscillations on the seismograph. Now superimpose a nuclear peak on that and you can't tell whether it's a nuclear blast occurring amidst the normal "background seismic noise" OR a "regular" earthquake preceded by its "crescendo".... Hence the need for an hydroacoustic crosscheck.
