As far as Iran's track record on democracy, it is a sham. They have all the institutions in place, but the judiciary lead by Khamenei as the Supreme Leader can override any law passed by parliament.

Its not a total sham. Freedom is increasing in Iran not unlike the increase of freedom in China. Its a slow process but its happening. Like I said, more and more women are going to the university. There is less concern over religious dress.......modern women in Teheran wear a scarf over their heads more as a fashion statement. Students are demonstrating for more freedoms. And yes, the Supreme leader can revoke those freedoms at a moments notice. However, we have to remember that we did not start out as free as we are now. It took time......lots of it. Democracy doesn't always happen in one fell swoop.

As far as the Shah goes, more bad U.S. policy. One day we will learn that we cannot prop up tyrants to buy short term stability. It always leads to long term instability.

Lastly, you say that diplomacy was at fault here wrt our relationship with Iran and Syria and I agree. However, both Iran and Syria are active supporters of terrorism and terrist groups.

Against Israel.......Syrian has had little to do with al Qaida and Iran has some connection with OBL but there is the Shia/Sunni faction that keeps Iran from becoming too cozy with OBL. After all, the Saudis are the arch enemy of the Iranians.

Bashar had a grand chance to turn to democracy, but he took the cowards way out and shelved those plans when the Baathists pressured him to keep the status quo. Iran is a lead by virulent regime that spews and incredible amount of vitriol against the U.S. and Israel. Very difficult to be diplomatic with a country that can't see past their own hate.

Iran has reason to hate us. If we can't see the cause and effect in play here, how are we ever going to get along with Muslims? You admitted the policy re. the Shah was bad. I suspect you also would agree that supporting Saddam in his war with Iran was bad as well. Do you think the Iranians have forgotten these incidents? Do you think our bad past behavior has endeared the Iranians to us? To often, I think Americans want to wipe out the past so that we are only responsible for the present. That's not how it works in the world.

What's worse.......our present leaders count on us not knowing America's past transgressions in the ME. And unfortunately, they are right.......few Americans understand the role we have played in the ME in the past and the reasons why we are so hated.
