"Why would Canadian firms close shop just because the government was forcing price controls on them if they believed that price controls were a public good?"
Because if they actually are private unsubsidized firms, they have to run a profit. "Public good" be d***es if you can't pay your suppliers and workers.
My point was if vaccine makers were even slightly profitable, they would continue to operate except in an environment like the US where rapid tort lawyers roam like gunslingers in the old west. Your investigation implies that no vaccine makers are particularly profitable anywhere in the world. You are correct that for profit companies have a primary duty to their shareholders to maximize profits. This means exiting low profit sectors.

I DO notice fresc completely dodged the question about all those Canadian vaccine makers. Convenient.
Someone has to provide the comedy relief.

"Canada does not have the problem with rabid tort lawyers yet."
Does the Canadian legal system even allow such to exist? This is a function of legislated economics. Tight caps and no class action suits pretty much wipe out that industry. According to fresc, apparently Canada has at least the caps. Of course, he didn't back his claim; just made it.
Did you ever arrive at the movie theater too late to catch the show you came to see, and watch something you never would have gone to otherwise? Maybe that is what it feels like to be a Canadian. <g>
