California has the death penalty but doesn't actually execute people. Currently (as of July 2004) California has 635 people on death row. This is more than the entire country had as recently as 1980.

I don't think he need fear for his life anytime soon.
It seems to run 20+ years between sentencing and execution- -if the conviction isn't overturned first.
