My mistake, I was thinking of the 67 war, where Israel launched the attack, but for very obvious reasons.

The neighbors do stir the pot, and are trouble in that regard. I was referring to a conventional military threat. I don't see Israel facing that in the near term, although WMD wrt Iran may be an issue.

Sunni and Shiite split in the Arab world is more fierce than anything I know in the Jewish world. The Jews have a very long history of cultural cohesion, despite genetic diversity. I'd stick my neck out a bit and say they are the most outstanding such example on the planet. I.e. the most cosmopolitan ethnic group around, if that makes any sense. However, despite that, there is a very strong cultural identity.

I know you will correct me on all of the above, but my WAG anyway.
