Imagine for a moment you're an old cow and you live on a farm you've never left since you were calved. To be bred to a top bull you have to be loaded onto a trailer and hauled hundreds of miles. During the breeding process you will be loaded and unloaded twice and the majority of broken knees, legs, lost eyes and other injuries in livestock occur during the hauling process. A lot of stress is also put on the animal in the hauling back process and this stress causes them to abort.

When we bred a lot of mares our stallion had a little nucleus of mares all to himself during the year. I did this because he was older and his show career was basically over and I did not want him to be lonely. This is my only experience with a semi-wild situation and his three little mares basically kicked the crap out of him anytime he looked at them the wrong way. If he tried to mount a mare that was not 100% willing they would all attack from different sides, screaming, striking, biting and kicking.

Regarding sizes of horses most people breed for larger male and females than would occur in nature simply because they think bigger is better. In the wild a horse that was 13 hands a few generations ago has been bred up to 16 hands high.

"Are male horses killed at birth or disposed of some other way as infants because artificial insemination technology makes them irrelevant?"

The value of an inferior male or female purebred can be less than it costs to register it, let alone feed and vet it for several years, some people do dispose of them at an early age.
