Re: Then there is something wrong with the chip ...

Were AMD's Athlon and Athlon XP designs defective just because pricing was significantly lower than Intel's?

It looks like Intel is just offering fair pricing for the performance offered. A 3.4GHz 1MB L2 Prescott with hyperthreading is still going to sell for less than a 3.0GHz Smithfield. For gamers and a majority of desktop users the 3.4GHz P4 would still be the better buy because Smithfield overall will offer no performance advantage (and quite possibly a performance decrease) with expensive and noisier cooling for a higher price. Same goes for 3.2GHz Prescott versus 2.8GHz Smithfield.

Hopefully AMD will offer a fair price as well. So far the only pricing info we have is the Anandtech rumor of $700, but no mention of frequency or if there would be faster/more expensive or slower/less expensive models. If AMD doesn't offer something in the <=$400 range Intel will own the dual desktop CPU market if they can produce Smithfield in volume and somewhat close to on schedule.
