"I don't much care for institutions. Commintment transcends that."

If that works for you great. Commitment is certainly at the heart of long term relationships. People firm up their commitments in all kinds of ways and most people who are successful at it agree that it is an on going challenge.

Marriage as an institution represents much more. For example: historically it is quite normal to see the marriage ceremony involving the whole community, because; it is not just a commitment of the couple but for the members of a community to recognize the relationship and nurture its success. Anyone posing temptations for one of the partners then, violates the healthy trust enjoined by the community.

Alternatives are of course tolerated in modern times. However, the notion of a whole commune, or specific alternative life styles being the 'Same' has been tested and failed completely. Even the long term relationship of 'partners' being lived out in some sort of parallel similarity to what traditional heterosexual couples is a rare exception, not the norm as the politico extremists like ionesco would have you believe.

Modern society doesn't much care what people do with their private parts in private places and that has nothing to do with the discussion of marriage. My recommendation for people who think marriage is a silly notion is that they leave it alone for people to enjoy who find great value in the notion.
