Hi Neocon; Re: "Do you suppose that the cleaning up of the situation in post- war Europe was something we could have walked away from? The resettlement of Holocaust survivors was one of the Big Issues we had to deal with."

I think that the way we handled the post-war situation in Europe was a travesty that the Democratic party should answer for. In addition to hundreds of millions of people falling under the hand of Communism, there were massive forced relocations of people in Europe due to quite arbitrary changes in state boundaries.

The same thing, or similar, happened post WW1. The basic problem is that the winners of wars tend to get a little greedy. It's a universal human trait to see the morality and logic behind a position that benefits oneself, but to ignore the morality and logic behind other positions.

So if you're saying that we handled these issues badly, not just in the case of the Jews, but also in the case of many more people in Europe itself, then I agree. Where we probably differ is in how well we think that we handled the Jewish situation. My analysis is that we screwed up, and we've been paying the price ever since. Right now are soldiers are paying the price in Iraq.

What we should have done was to allow and assist unrestricted Jewish immigration into the United States, and to influence other countries to allow the same, though I can't see why anyone would want to live anywhere other than here.
