The battle will be in 3G. GPRS is too slow to be much use, and too expensive. W-CDMA aka 3GSM aka UMTS aka 3G isn't as good a 3G technology as 1xEV-DO but it's better than GPRS and EDGE.

Having a mobile phone is not the point. Having Google right there in the palm of your hand, along with high-precision position location, BREW and general cyberspace access is what matters. That can only be done by upgrading to the new technology, which few Europeans have done.
