Piaget and later Kohlberg did some nice work on providing a guidelines for the study of moral development. It has been around for a while but still widely referenced. I have simplified the ideas for the sake of kicking off some discussion. Stage 1: Punishment avoiding pleasure seeking: Children seek to meet their needs without getting into trouble. Stage 2: Conformance: Children seek to fit in while living up to the expectations of others. Stage three: Group identity: What is good for the group is right for the child. Stage 4: Social Conscience: Motivated by what is good for society. Stage 5: Social contract: What is right is determined by as good for the individual while having a universal principle for all. Stage 6: Universal/Ethical principles: The individual is governed by principles that may or may not agree with societal laws and mores. Obviously each child is unique and may have idiosyncratic differences in what they value. It may be partly their nature and partly the guidance or lack their of from the environment that ultimately provides a foundation for their adult moral view points.
