Stratus focuses on service: Stratus job cuts felt in Maynard

MAYNARD -- The parent company of Stratus Technologies Inc. said it is slashing about 20 percent of its worldwide work force, with 77 job losses coming locally.
The maker of so-called fault-tolerant computer servers announced a cost-cutting move this week that will result in a reduction of 180 jobs out of its total staff of 903.
Stratus has headquarters in Luxembourg but most of its operations, including more than 500 employees, are in Maynard.

Microsoft cuts 62 software jobs

Microsoft Corp. has cut 62 software-testing jobs from one of its Windows groups, attributing the decision to a shift toward automated testing in parts of the operation.
The elimination of the software test-engineering positions from the Windows Core Operating System Division was effective late last week.
It is the second Microsoft job reduction in recent months attributed to efforts to shift away from manual testing. Separately, in September, Microsoft cited similar reasons when it cut 93 positions involved in testing and user education in its Windows Server division.

BUFFALO, N.Y. Failure to agree on a sales tax hike will result in thousands of pink slips going out today to Buffalo-area county workers.
That's according to Erie County Executive Joel Giambra.
Giambra says at layoff notices must go out today for at least three-thousand county workers -- about one-third of the county's workforce -- because local lawmakers can't agree to raise the sales tax.
