I have not yet been able to log on at the site selected. So, I decided (in dribs and drabs, when I had a few free moments) to create a spreadsheet to calculate everyone's returns. I was able to use the spreadsheet that Marc had previously created as the basic framework, which saved hours (thanks, Marc!).

Basically, I calculated each contestant's number of shares of each stock held in one sheet of an excel file. I have it semi-automated so that all I have to do is load current prices into the another sheet in the file (from two portfolios I have created in quote.com), which are multiplied by the shares held to get each contestant's current balance. I can do this periodically if everyone is interested. So my questions are --

1. Is everyone OK with me providing the listing of all contestants' balances or is it better to just show the highest performers (in the event that the laggards don't want their performance made public).

2. How often would an update be useful? At each month-end? Quarterly? Obviously, these are all points in time and are meaningless in the long run.

In any event, I am sure there are some kinks/errors that I have to work out, but just to test the spreadsheet I plugged in Friday's closing prices. Only five of us were in the black, with the best performer being BulbaMan, having a return of 6.5% (account balance is $106,522). The cumulative return for all contestants is currently -5.2%

Here are the prices I have used if anyone wants to check them out for accuracy. Please let me know if you see any errors. [For the two foreign stocks, I have used the exchange rates at 12/21/2004 and 1/21/2005 -- not sure what is the fairest way to approach this. Do we want foreign currency fluctuations to impact a contest like this? Either way, Nigel and Wilder should definitely check AOM.TO and BIO.L to make sure I did not completely bungle those.]
