Abbas and Sharon seem like two men who understand the above and are willing to strike a deal after some preconditions are met

Sharon understands it, but Abbas? So far, he's making gestures against Hamas while assuring everybody that he won't ever actually fight Hamas even if they defy him. So naturally they defy him; more rockets today. Israel is fed up with promises. The only hopeful sign is that the UN and the EU are, unusually for them, making noises that they too are tired of the attacks. Maybe Arafat's game won't work anymore? But the Pals know nothing else, and the UN/EUniks always reflexively hop into their corner. I'm not holding my breath here.
