I read what Powers wrote -- he still thinks there is a left and a right -- there isn't. There is the center and the right. Dems lost because they thought wrongly that there is a left to appeal to -- hare krishna to you to. The center in the US is unrepresented -- they vote for Bush because Kerry didn't appeal to them and Bush got the fear thing going. By the way -- opposing the unilateral invasion of Iraq is decidedly centrist -- but Kerry lost that policy option when he foolishly voted in favor of giving Bush a war mandate. You cannot have it both ways. When Kerry talked on the economy, he tried to talk to the left -- but it does not resonate with the center in numbers large enough to matter. Bush did a lousy job in his first term, won a slim majority and now has a low performance rating -- and he won by appealing in spades to the hard core far right and displacing a Democratic party that still thinks there is a left -- what dopes. Clinton won by being a slick centrist -- he almost lost his way by letting his wife play "lets make a leftist medical deal". It flopped and he was lucky to escape with his poltical skin. There is no left. The Dems need to understand the center, and to understand that Bush does not represent the center. Bush, stripped clean of the pretensions, represents the hard core right. He is the face of "the diet version of friendly fascism".
