I think you have your history wrong. The Roman Empire fell because there just happened to be barbarian hordes in every direction. But oddly enough, Rome still exists. It's called Italy.

I can tell you that what happened in Abu Graib is a statistical anomaly. Most Christians would not do things like that. Sure there are bad apples in every group. However, when we create a pervasive culture of American violence and sex with any gender, is it any wonder morals fail to surface when people face the true test of their character?

Yes, I blame Hollywood. When my kids watch T.V. and all they see is Janet Jackson's boob, Rappers simulating killing people in their videos, blood and death in every movie, torture portrayed as par for the course in intelligence gathering, do you really think we've created the type of moral human beings who would say no to Abu Graib?

There are specific people at fault in this case, but there is a pervasive atmosphere that exists in this country that increases the probability that this sort of thing happens.

Take a look at your old sociology books and read up on the importance of taboos in a society. I view Christianity, or any religion (besides Fundamentalist Islam), as being a societal framework which allows for a more productive intermingling of a group of people. Christianity inculcates taboos in young people, which become part of their moral fabric. This is crucial to a functioning society.

Take away taboos from a society and you've take huge leap towards anarchy and lawlessness.
