I recall a story about a Cuban geologist who was out 10% in his resource calculations of a laterite deposit. I'm not sure what acceptable was but he was tied to a donkey and led into the local town where he was stoned by the populace. His boss was a party member and did this to instill fear in his subordinates.

The simply answer to your question is the goodness of any science or discipline is based on the integrity of the practitioner.
