Well, I understand what you are saying, Rambi, in the sense of hypocrisy. It IS hypocritical to pray or make a big scene about your religious beliefs just to be seen. I am somewhat conflicted about everything else regarding this story. I am not sure it is very black or white, particularly because of two things: (1) it is my understanding that the Church has been QUIETLY honoring the aborted remains for some time, which would usually be a good thing, and (2) mothers of aborted fetuses who have had a change of heart (or a deepening of conscience) since their abortions also are involved in the ritual, so the Church IS giving comfort to some of them in this process.

So it is kind of murky to me. And what is the appropriate political role of a church? The Catholic Church has always been very active politically. They were on the side that I supported politically in South America and in Northern Ireland. Nuns and priests historically have died for their political beliefs, in fact.

I would really, really like to know what women are told about the disposal of their fetuses, as you point out. Does anyone here know the answer to that?

Philosophically speaking, what rights to a fetus does a woman retain when she has an abortion?
