How do such thresholds for "need" get determined? Market forces? Environmental groups? Government regulations? If people have Teflon pans then their detergent use goes way down. Detergents are often estrogenic and cause gender shifts when in the environment. They are commonly pollution sources that also increase the biological oxygen demand in water, leading to souring of water resources. Some, like dishwasher machine agents, are really caustic.

Is it better to go back to 20 x the amount of detergents and caustic chemicals to clean "simple" surfaces? The ONLY agencies that could make these decisions are the scientific ones. I don't think either side of the debate is being very scientific.

Teflon certainly will reduce your detergent use by 20 when cleaning your pans. From this point of view it is environmentally friendly. Sometimes all I use is water on my new stuff. We don't have birds any more and the Teflon is easy. Do I need it? Well, I’ll tell you I need a lot less detergent. We don't use it at all on the pots and pans and no Comet scouring powders, either. This means that I'm running the dishwasher (sodium hypochlorite) less often. A quick wipe is all you need and a tiny dab of detergent if you want to do a really thorough job.

As another example, it is widely known that live polio vaccine will cause some incidental cases of polio, but you also get incidental innoculation of people too lazy to participate in the immunization. ON BALANCE, everyone is better off. But if you contracted polio???? You'd probably not be to happy living with the disease that you contracted through eradication plans.
