Jewish law did not forbid alcoholic drink in their culture, but prohibited drunkenness.
Some verses concerning it:
Proverbs 31:4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, Or for rulers to desire strong drink,
Verse 6, though: Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And wine to him whose life is bitter.
(instructions for when they come to Jerusalem for the holy days) Deuteronomy 14:26 You may spend the money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen, or sheep, or wine, or strong drink, or whatever your heart desires; and there you shall eat in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice, you and your household.
And:
(Paul To Timothy) 1 Timothy 5:23 -- No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. |
