Someone misposted this on the UTEK board and I thought it might provide some fodder for discussion here. BTW, isn't "FRAM" a protected name? I wonder if Matsushita used that designation in their press release?

Matsushita affiliate gets US patents on FRAM chips

TOKYO, Sept 2 (Reuter) - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd (6752.T) said on Tuesday that an affiliate, Matsushita Electric Co, had obtained major patents for ferro-electric random-access memory, or FRAM, chips in the United States.

Matsushita Electric has also applied for the same patents in Japan.

The company added that the circuit structure of prototype FRAM chips made by some rivals infringes on Matsushita Electric's patents.

The market for FRAM chips is expected to reach around three trillion yen by 2010, Matsushita
said.

FRAM chips can retain data without a power source.
