I will answer your question with a question or 2 or 12:

To use an analogy, who would you rather have tell your kids about the dangers of marijuana? The guy who smoked bushels of it in his younger years, or the preacher who never took a hit in his life.

Do you trust that heavy ex-smoker to be totally clean now, assuming the message you wish to convey is not to abuse drugs? Do you trust him not to tell you he's a clean crusader when he's toking on the side and even selling some to support the renewed habit on the sly? Will you leave him alone with your kids after they get their allowance and trust him not to entice them into having some illicit fun? What is he isn't really who he portrays himself to be?

Let's assume he was busted once or twice in the past - does that increase or decrease your faith in his judgment and honesty?

Why would you trust him at all unless you really knew him well personally? Don't you think you could find a more effective, reliable role model to teach those lessons without running the risk that you are tacitly aiding and abetting further abusive, criminal activity?

I will say this, I certainly understand now why certain SI personalities were allowed numerous TOU violations with token suspensions that made a mockery of any standards of conduct on SI. It's a very smelly chapter in SI history that I am glad to see is not condoned now, as far as I can tell.

PS Despite the analogy you posed above and my reaction, I would vote to legalize grass in a New York minute. Total waste of law enforcement resources trying to clamp down on it.
