"Many ethnic groups" is very different from "race." Race is a blunt object that can't and won't get you to the level of ethnicity. If you want to know whether a patient is from an ethnic group that uses folk medicine, why don't you ask them that directly instead of beating around the bush? "Cambodian" or "Hmong" gives you information you can use. "Asian" doesn't.
