CB,

As for the genetics of race -- how on earth would putting "white" on a chart flag Eastern-European ancestry? For that matter, how does "white" or "Asian" flag any genetic disease?

You have stated you see no point in the concept of 'race' and have even taken the time to research and post a study that denies race exists. I have provide several specific examples of genetic diseases including 2 with similar initial symptoms - celiac and sickle cell and all you ever do is respond with more attacks and denial.

It would be cool to have a saliva or in-office blood test to screen for all genetic ailments, but ancestry does have a lot to do with genetic diseases (by definition) and lots of ancestry can be visually determined (though not all as you have pointed out).

A good doctor will check all symptoms regardless of appearance, but its pretty unusual to see sickle cell in European americans and celiac in African americans. The current tests for these diseases are expensive and 2nd level tests are invasive (for celiac you are sedated and a tube is put down your throat to get a biopsy from your duodendum - I can tell you its not much fun).

Now genetic diseases usually come from specific regional populations - note that the other large Tay-Sacks bubble outside of Easter European Jews were French Canadians. Both populations were very isolated at one time (for several generations) and had a lot of close relative intermarriage.

With Tay-Sacks if you are in the ethnic profile you have a 1 in 27 chance of carrying. The rest of the northern european population hits at 1 in over 300 - a couple of orders of magnitude. Other ethnic profiles (such as asian or african) move even further away (1 to 2 magnitudes).
