Sara Lee sees commodity costs higher than plan
Tue Jan 25, 2005 10:24 AM ET
CHICAGO, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Sara Lee Corp. (SLE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Tuesday said it now expects costs for commodities like cotton, energy, meat and coffee to rise $350 million in the current fiscal year, up $100 million from its previous forecast. At the same time, the company is limited in its ability to further raise prices to make up for the higher costs, Steven McMillan, chairman and chief executive, said in a conference call with analysts.

McMillan also said management is "very actively" considering further portfolio initiatives for the company, which has been shedding businesses to focus on higher-growth products. The company has said it is looking to sell its European branded apparel business.
