FWIW, I learned in a discussion with a rose expert a while ago; all the things you described are not natural to domestic roses.
Many years ago (40-50+) a certain variety of rose from IRAN became immensely popular.
It was propagated profusely here in the US and began failing in many regions.
It was only a matter of time before the plant started to display these undesirable results since Iran is mostly desert conditions, and the US isn't.
As it turns out, people just assume this is a natural characteristic of roses.

Scott, Do you have any knowledge of this 'rumor?'
