Re: You guys seem to be forgetting that *Intel* also has a rather large set of single core offerings that they need to sell for good prices in 2005.

You seem to forget that Intel has money to burn and AMD doesn't. So what if each Smithfield CPU costs Intel $50 in profitability due to lost sales or higher manufacturing costs. One million Smithfields would equal a $50 million dollars "lost". Big deal. The $50 million lost would drive down Intel's profits from $7.50 billion to $7.45 billion...or $7.5 billion rounded up. :)

It is the equivalent of advertising. If Intel can claim they are the first to dual core desktop and can claim almost all of the dual desktop marketshare it will be money well spent. It will also help ensure that future dual core programs and benchmarks will be optimized for Intel processors.

That is still a big IF. A Smithfield paper launch similar to what Intel pulled with the initial Prescott launch wouldn't be well received. AMD pushing lower frequency Toledos down in the <$400 range would also prevent Intel from gaining much of a PR victory with Smithfield.
