David, the ring of fire refers to the ring of volcanoes, which happen to be the result of subducted oceanic crust, which contains organic and other potentially gaseous substances which provide the explosive power of volcanoes. The earthquakes are a result of the subduction process as well as pushing and shoving of crust.

Of course it's all interconnected. But Greenland's ice is NOT connected to Sumatra's subduction, other than very tenuously. When looking for causes, the CIA is a better bet [the disbanded Office of Disinformation denies the CIA was involved, but we can't believe them if they even deny they exist, if that's not too many double negatives to keep track of].
