Is it "gibberish" because of our inability to understand it?

Genes are sections of DNA which are marked by definite begining and ending strands. It's a very familiar concept in communications and after all that what DNA does, it communicates information to descendant generations.

There are uses for gaps between the genes filled with "gibberish". A prominate advantage is that it provides a gap in time as one gene has been interpreted and another is to follow. This gives the proteans time to finish forming before the next gene is read. DNA that has this type of structure is better able to code for proteans and so the containing organism reproduces more successfully.

Of course it is very much more complicated than that, as is any system that is assembled by trial and error instead of intelligent design.
