An interesting release. There was at least one error of fact and one logical error in Dr. Bowen's release, which seemed largely intended to vindicate Phentermine.
The error of logic: he makes lucid comments regarding the valvular pathology noted in a few patients who have undergone surgery, and the histological similarity to patients suffering from disorders associated with high peripheral serotonin (e.g. carcinoid disorders). He then makes an unfortunate leap: that since high peripheral serotonin levels cause these valvular disorders, the culprit must be the serotonergic drugs, Pondimin and Redux. Dr. Bowen appears to be unaware that these drugs lower peripheral serotonin (i.e. serotonin outside the CNS) and indeed fenfluramine (Pondimin) has been suggested as a possible treatment for carcinoid disorder itself.
The error of fact: Roche has withdrawn its application for Xenical due to FDA concerns about the possibility of breast cancer. Not only is it not going to be available within the next few weeks or months, some estimates are that it will be delayed a year (and that is assuming no further link to breast cancer risk is found).
Dr. Bowen's points about the NEJM taking limited data too far were on target; unfortunately he then replicated the error himself. NeuroInvestment
