NY Times On Iraq Today: Fear, But No Hope

By Bob Kohn

Today's front page of the Times declared, "Across Baghdad, Vote Brings Fear." It also brings hope, but the Times nixed that idea too by quoting a 46-year old Iraqi dentist on the front page: "There is no hope."

It was a clever way to negatively frame the paper's two reports on the President's press conference, both of which appeared on the front page: "Bush Casts Iraqi Vote As Step In Global March to Freedom" and "Communicator In Chief Keeps the Focus Positive."

Meanwhile, buried in an article about the U.N.'s role in the Iraqi elections on page 16, the Times quoted the director of electoral assistance division for the U.N.:

For me as a professional in elections, it is absolutely amazing how far the electoral commission of Iraq has come, considering that eight months ago it didn't exist.

Perhaps there is hope after all.
