This story is reminiscent of the saying man's inhumanity to man.

I remember when as a young woman working at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation with the Special Services... a lot of the men returning from Korea did bragging. About how they had raped girls, broken their backs, thrown them down wells. They also described cutting off the beards of the old men. Beards were a sign of honor.

The stories I heard made a shift in me from a naive young girl into what almost was a nervous breakdown.

What, our wonderful soldiers who gave chocolate to to everyone and who were so loved in WW II committing these obscenities. I did not know then they were atrocities. That word was not in my vocabulary.. I was 21 years old.

Later when Mai Lai occurred I could understand it.
