China to eliminate extra educational fees: official www.chinaview.cn 2005-01-27 15:23:52 BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese Minister of Education ZhouJi said here Thursday that Chinese government is confident that itcan eliminate extraneous fees charged by individual schools. "Random charging in education infringe upon people's interests,obstruct the education reform and especially has a bad effect uponthe school children," Zhou said in a press conference held here Thursday. In recent years, Zhou acknowledged, China has been promoting "one fee for all" in compulsory education, which includes all charges and forbids added fees. This practice has so far proved viable and effective. With the fast progress of China's economy, more and more Chinese parents prefer to send their children to schools with besteducation resources. Therefore, some schools try to profit by charging extra fees, such as charge for extracurricular activitiesor weekend classes. Zhou said the problems can be solved with more governmental input, regulations and rules as well as enhanced supervision. According to Zhou, the Chinese government has clearly set a line between random charging and necessary fees, and experts are working on more specific rules and regulations in line with people's living conditions in different regions.
