Yes. I first found out about that in the mid-nineties.

So you're saying that it's common practice for shorts to get discounted shares or free shares to call off their attack?
And of course by attack, I don't just mean the actual act of shorting. The message board attack by guru and followers pretty much stopped at that point. And so did the threats of SEC action, etc.
