Art, I believe that what you are talking about is an "Urban Legend" similar to the belief that at least a portion of investors believe that "market makers" (or MMs) try to shake out the weak hands and load up on more stock. The analyst is providing his or her opinion based upon their expertise and/or proprietary information network. Sell-side research is ultra-competitive nowadays given that compensation for analysts cannot be tied to Investment Banking Transactions. Therefore, it is imperative that the analyst try to make as much money on trading revenue. Of course, commission rates are compressing. Dave
