LAS VEGAS (Hollywood Reporter) - Discovery Communications Inc., parent company of the Discovery, History and Animal Planet cable channels, on Thursday laid off 24 employees at its domestic division and accepted the resignation of its programming chief at TLC, which has suffered in the ratings.

5600....Proctor and Gamble on merger with Gilette
NEW YORK - In the headlines this morning, Procter & Gamble is buying Gillette for $57 billion in stock, creating the world's largest consumer-products company.

Gillette (nyse: G - news - people ) ranks No. 1 worldwide in shaving supplies. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett, whose Berkshire Hathaway (nyse: BRKa - news - people ) is the largest shareholder in Gillette, with a 9% stake, has voiced support for the deal. The combined company would boast hundreds of brands--from Pampers diapers to Duracell batteries--and more than $60 billion in annual revenue.

P&G (nyse: PG - news - people ) also announced a stock buyback of up to $22 billion. It plans to cut up to $16 billion in costs and lay off 4% of the combined workforce of 140,000. Separately, P&G said its quarterly profits rose 12% on cost controls and sales growth.
