Basic pay for an E-1 starts at $1142.70/mo. That's pretty shabby.

Not included in your figure are food, clothing, shelter, work transportation, numerous free or very low cost recreational opportunities, 100% medical, dental and vision coverage, life insurance and extensive family allowances (free housing, etc) if the soldier is married.

After 2 years, the average soldier earns between $20,400 and $22,525 annually plus the bennies listed above and numerous other special and incentive pays not included in base pay.
