Coffee and Cigarettes *** Fans of Bill Murray can see him in one of the vignettes. If a person is not put off by excessive vulgarity, the filthy critic reviews The Life Aquatic here: bigempire.com I'll be skipping Life Aquatic based on that review. Filthy is an excellent critic, I go by his picks a lot and do well.
Anyway, a couple of the chapters are done very well--fans of Cate Blanchett will like her playing against herself, although that is not one of the better scenes. The best one I will not spoil--but it is very touching and makes the DVD worth renting.
Trial at Nuremburg *** Richard Widmark is a third cousin of Renee's, so I watched this and was glued to the teevee.
And watched again, this time on the big garage screen: Edward Scissorhands and a Nightmare Before Christmas, both four stars. These are wonderful movies, and I'm not sure I should have showed them to my nearly five year old--although I did skip several scenes in Scissorhands, only showing the kid the wonderful sweet fantastical stuff. Edward should have been reworked somehow without the Anthony Michael Hall character, though I don't know how you would do it. I also skipped the death of Price's character which of course is the second most important scene in the movie. She can see the whole thing when she turns 10.
Advice if you have five year olds... Nighmare is tricky--I don't think this caused any real nightmares, but I may have showed this a few years too soon. I suspect five year olds are more innocent than, say, an eight year old, and so can brush off some of the scary imagery. The rag doll is very sweet. The boogieman is actually damn scary. Nuff said, skip til ten. |
